His research focuses on local news, partisan polarization, and campaign strategy. Darr has co-authored two books: Home Style Opinion: How Local Newspapers Can Slow Polarization (2021) and Storefront Campaigning (2024). He received an Andrew Carnegie Fellowship in 2022 for his project investigating how newspapers can earn trust and reduce polarization. Darr earned his Ph.D. in political science from the University of Pennsylvania.

Rep. von Haefen was a Parent Teacher Association (PTA) leader at the school, county and state level and is a fierce advocate for North Carolina’s public schools. Rep. von Haefen served as the President of the Wake County PTA Council from 2017-2018 and served on the Board of Directors for five years. She also served on the North Carolina PTA Board of Directors from 2017-2019 and was the State Advocacy Chair and Federal Legislative Chair for NCPTA. Rep. von Haefen is still a proud member of the PTA at the schools her children attend in Wake County, and she also works as a substitute teacher with Wake County Public Schools.
